Welcome to Year 5, also known as Hazel class

In Year 5 we aim to promote a love of learning. This year is designed to be challenging as we prepare ourselves for Year 6 and life beyond primary school but we always endeavour to have fun while we learn.

We link Y5 learning to our Learning Challenges and develop our understanding through cross curricular links. We particularly enjoy our text-led approach to English as we have opportunities to read a variety of interesting texts. This year we have enjoyed exploring ‘The Jaguar Stones’, ’Running Wild’ and ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’

We have a range of Science, History and Geography challenges throughout the year which includes: Space, The Mayans, The Rainforest, Forces and Ancient Greece.

Children in Year 5 are expected to take responsibility for their learning in school and outside of school when completing home learning challenges. We aim to develop life skills to become more mature and independent learners. Year 5 children aim to be good role models to younger pupils, set good examples and promote a love of learning.

Home Learning

We expect children to read at least 3 times a week and complete their reading records which will also help to earn house points.

Y5 children will be given a login username and password for Times Tables Rockstars www.ttrockstars.com This is a really useful online game children can play at home to help them learn their times tables.

Other homework will be set throughout the year. This could be in the form of some maths or spelling or it could be a mini project or even something to make, linked to our Design Technology work in school.

For PE it is really useful if children can bring their indoor and outdoor PE kits and have them available every day. This means that they will benefit from maximum PE opportunities throughout the week.

We value parental support with all learning so please do not hesitate to talk to us if you have any questions.

Spelling lists for the year

This list is a guide to the type of words children will need to spell in upper Key Stage 2. It is important that pupils also recognise the different spelling patterns, and understand the morphology of the words – the study of words, how they are formed
