Teacher Training

Highwoods Academy is part of an alliance of Doncaster Primary Schools offering initial teacher training.

Graduates are eligible for a place on the School Direct training programme if they meet the necessary entry requirements. School Direct is a one year full-time, school based route to qualification as a teacher and trainees achieve QTS on successful completion of the course.

We are working with Doncaster ITT Partnership as a provider, so please email them at ittpartnership@doncaster.gov.uk if you require any further information or have any questions. Initial applications will be dealt with by the partnership prior to the recruitment process led by the individual schools in the alliance.

Highwoods Academy works collaboratively with the Teaching School to deliver high quality teacher training.

For over 12-years the Doncaster ITT Partnership has worked closely with schools, academies, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council and the University Centre Doncaster to train hundreds of teachers for Doncaster’s schools. Many former students are now in senior posts in our schools and some are now helping to train the next generation of teachers.

The Partnership has been supporting school-based teacher training since 2003 and is the Accredited ITT Provider.

What training programmes are we offering?

• School Direct – Tuition-fee places
• School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) – Tuition-fee places

Successful completion of all training programmes leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but for an additional fee, an optional Post Graduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Education is also available. This additional academic course is aimed at students who may wish to work towards a Masters in Education in future years and is fully integrated into the main QTS training. The PG Cert is accredited by The University of Hull.

Why do school-based training?

If you would like your Initial Teacher Training (ITT) to be more ‘hands-on’ by having more time training in the classroom, putting theory into practice and gaining confidence through increased contact with the school environment, then school-based training is probably a good option for you.

All schools in the Partners in Learning – Doncaster Teaching School Alliance endeavour to deliver the best possible in-school training with excellent training facilities and other school experiences in a number of Alliance schools.

Partners in Learning schools, working with the Doncaster ITT Partnership, pride themselves on keeping all of the training local; this means reduced travelling time that allows students more planning and preparation time.
